Gardner Taylor—known as the "dean of the nation's Black preachers"—is still mentoring aspiring seminarians, and his sermons are studied in divinity schools worldwide. He led the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn, NY for 42 years and was the first African American on the New York Public School Board. He also helped form the Progressive National Baptist Convention. The grandson of slaves, he was a close friend and mentor to Dr. King. In '00, Taylor was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
