TransJazz continues the tradition of Soul Liberation.
Saturday afternoon, September 6th, 2008 at 3pm.
During the days of Soul Liberation, we remember Henry Greenidge telling us how Christian music was not limited to certain styles. Some of us continued to use that principle in forming EVOC in the 1970’s (led by Doug Booth) and then TransJazz in the 1980’s (first led by Ira Woods). They called it fusion, and later smooth jazz. TransJazz was somewhat dormant for a few years, kept together by Ron Mitchell, and then it took off when a very talented young singer joined in 2002. God has since inspired the music and opened doors to make the band an active, intergenerational, ministry. Among other things, the band did warm-up for a series of concerts featuring Melba Moore. Be free to check out the group at the event below:
Bonnie St. John Will Speak and TransJazz Will Perform at Convent Avenue Baptist Church
Bonnie St. John will speak and the TransJazz smooth jazz-gospel band will perform at Convent Avenue Baptist Church in NYC in response to the historic African AIDS orphan crisis. This event will take place on Saturday afternoon, September 6th, 2008 at 3pm.
Bonnie St. John has been described by NBC Nightly News as “one of the five most inspiring women in America.” She is a motivational speaker who was disabled and abused as a child, yet rose to become the first African-American woman to win Olympic medals in skiing, a Rhodes scholar, and a member of President’s Clinton’s Economic Council (see www.bonniestjohn.com).
TransJazz is a recording band with an uplifting sound that appeals to people across generations. In 2004 EBL Records released their debut CD album, Transitions. With a style described as "Sade turned on to Jesus," songs from the album have been featured on radio stations around the country. TransJazz was nominated for awards by the Urban Gospel Industry in 2004 and 2005. The band’s second CD is due for release in November 2008 (see www.myspace.com/transjazz).
There is no charge for admission. The net proceeds of a freewill offering will benefit World Vision’s work with orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda. With over 12 million AIDS orphans in Africa, churches and individuals are coming together to change the lives of thousands of these children through World Vision sponsorships. Convent Avenue Baptist Church is located at 145th St. and Convent Avenue in Manhattan. For more information: 212 234-6767 or hapny@hotmail.com.
